It’s a decent little tale in all – I appreciated how everything is laid out to you and you’re not forced to try and discover every detail of lore yourself, like in the Dark Souls series… You can expect to meet plenty of characters on your journey (some good, most bad), whilst most of the story progresses in-between missions with the levels themselves mostly focusing on the game’s action elements. It blends together a historical setting, samurai, fantasy, and utter monstrosities to put together a tale that doesn’t always take itself too seriously, but isn’t afraid to show its brutal side either. Nioh is set in the 1600s and puts you in the shoes of William Adams, a sailor who, after escaping from his prison cell in the London Tower, ends up venturing to Japan to take down an evil demonic force. There’s no denying that it clearly wears its inspirations like a badge of honour, but it also has enough of its own ideas to help it stand out as a unique and very enjoyable release. Just calling it ‘like Dark Souls’ is an understatement though, because Nioh is a lot more than that. If that’s not an awesome selling point though, I don’t know what is. You know how it’s become a bit of a cliché to say that games are ‘Souls-like’? Or that they’re the ‘Dark Souls’ of a particular genre? Well, in Nioh’s case, it’s probably the best way to describe it – it’s like Dark Souls, except it’s set in Japan and you’re a Samurai. Not going to pick Nioh 2 though, but it's been time well spent.Platform(s): PC (Reviewed), PlayStation 4 At least in Fallen Order you didn't have to worry about these pseudo RPG elements that makes little difference.Īll in all, I'm still enjoying the game, and I've gotten pretty good at it.

You can spend a lot of time worrying about your armor but still get totalled with two hits from a middle tier enemy. I understand some gamers love the gameplay, but to me it feels rather cheap.

Once I reached Japan though, I decided to keep playing because I loved the Sengoku setting. At first, I was ready to quit when I realized it was a Souls game. Regarding Nioh, the game has grown on me. TBH I'm not very keen to this genre, and I only enjoyed Fallen Order because of the Star Wars theme, although I must admit I liked the challenge. When I decided to install it, I had no idea this was a Souls game, and my only previous experience was Fallen Order, which AFAIK is not considered as difficult. I'm currently playing the game, I think I'm almost to the final boss.
